Emerging from a turbulent period that included an extended shutdown of its facilities, South African radioisotope producer NTP Radioisotopes said it doubled its molybdenum-99 (Mo-99) production runs last November.
NTP, a subsidiary of South African Nuclear Energy (NECSA), credited higher yields and increased efficiency for the improved performance. The increased output meant that it has been able to assist the global market with additional volumes of radioisotopes on an ad hoc basis, the company said.
NTP, one of three large global commercial producers of Mo-99, had experienced a shutdown of its facilities between November 2017 and November 2018. A staggered return to service of its facilities has been underway since it launched a Sustainable Return to Service Programme in early 2019, according to the firm.
