The Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) has recommended a return to pre-COVID-19 pandemic protocols for ventilation (V)/perfusion (Q) scans.
"SNMMI believes that ventilation/perfusion (V/Q) lung scans are safe to perform when local regulatory and institutional standard procedures and guidelines are followed," SNMMI said in a statement.
V/Q scans -- imaging to assess airflow and blood flow in the lungs -- came under scrutiny early in the COVID-19 pandemic due to their potential to create aerosols that could be released into a room and potentially infect staff members. Many nuclear medicine sites opted to stop performing the studies.
If a patient is suspected of having or has confirmed COVID-19 or if a surge in COVID-19 cases or other serious respiratory illness occurs, it is imperative to stay vigilant and follow local policies and procedures regarding patient and staff safety precautions and protocols, SNMMI added.
