Toshiba America Medical Systems of Tustin, CA, will consolidate its MRI manufacturing and engineering operations, currently based in South San Francisco, CA, into its parent company’s manufacturing and engineering operations in Nasu, Japan.
About 140 employees will be affected by the decision, some of whom will be offered other jobs at TAMS, according to the vendor.
The move will allow for lower engineering and manufacturing costs, while taking advantage of Toshiba’s corporate management innovation program, according to Toshiba.
In addition, the company has announced that it will expand its research and development operations in South San Francisco to cover CT, x-ray, vascular, and ultrasound imaging modalities. Toshiba said it believes the move will allow the vendor to work more closely with U.S. institutions.
The new Research and Development Center will be led by chief scientist David Kramer, who joined Toshiba America MRI in 1986.
