GE Medical Systems’ Signa Infinity, a new 1.5-tesla MRI scanner, was given 510(k) clearance January 28 by the FDA, just in time for the vendor to show it off at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City.
GE is providing the Olympic Polyclinic with a mobile version of Signa Infinity for use during the Games. The system comprises a complete selection of coils, and can image in any orthogonal or oblique plane (including single- and double-axis obliques), using a wide variety of pulse sequences.
At Infinity’s core is a CXK4 magnet, which the Waukesha, WI, company claims provides the industry's best homogeneity for consistent image quality. Infinity is based on GE’s LX operating system, already in use on other Signa platforms.
