MRI use has seen a 15% growth rate with more that 18 million procedures performed in the U.S. in 2001, according to a report by consulting firm IMV Medical Information. The data, released in a market summary report of 4,401 fixed MRI systems, also found an increase in MR use for vascular, breast, and cardiac procedures.
The Des Plaines, IL-based group said that vascular procedures are performed in 58% of the sites and account for 4% of the imaging studies on MRI, a 3% increase since 1994. Breast and cardiac procedures, although accounting for only 1% of the total studies, are performed by 23% and 13% of the surveyed sites, respectively.
The report compares current MRI trends with four previous surveys conducted by the firm in the 1990s. It is available at www.imvlimited.com.
