New details on Illinois leasing suit; economics of 3D processing

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

New details are emerging in the lawsuit filed by the Illinois attorney general's office against imaging centers in the state that have set up per-click equipment leasing deals with referring physicians.

As reported in our MRI Digital Community this week, the AG's office has filed an amended complaint that describes a number of practices it believes are illegal. The complaint provides details ranging from the way the leasing arrangements were structured to the amount that referring physicians could expect to earn over the course of a year by leasing blocks of time on imaging equipment.

The AG's office claims the deals are a violation of state antikickback and consumer fraud laws, and that they kill competition in the state by making it more difficult for imaging centers to stay alive without resorting to per-click arrangements. Get the rest of the details by clicking here.

In other news, a new article in our Advanced Visualization Digital Community by staff writer Erik L. Ridley examines the economic implications of 3D advanced visualization, as covered in a recent presentation by 3D and PACS expert Dr. Eliot Siegel.

Launching a 3D service can create a whole host of new billing and quality assurance issues, issues that are being handled differently across the country. For example, do you bill differently if 3D processing is conducted on an independent workstation versus on the modality console? Can you use 3D billing codes with all imaging procedures?
