Anesthesiologist group crafts MRI advisories

The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) has developed a set of advisories for administering anesthetics during MRI procedures.

The document includes provisions for moderate sedation, deep sedation, and general anesthesia, as well as ventilator or critical care support. The ASA recommended that the advisories be adopted, modified, or rejected according to clinical needs or constraints.

The advisory statements also focus on education, screening for anesthetic care providers and ancillary support personnel, patient screening, patient monitoring during MRI, and postprocedure care.

The document, titled "Practice Advisory on Anesthetic Care for Magnetic Resonance Imaging," is published in the March issue of Anesthesiology.
