Major discovery of helium averts shortage for MRI

Scientists have discovered a vast new supply of helium in Tanzania -- good news, because the world supply has been dwindling, according to a report from the BBC.

Researchers from the U.K. and Norway discovered more than 54 billion cubic feet of the gas in the East African Rift Valley by using expertise gained from oil and gas exploration, noted an article published in the Guardian newspaper.

The cache is enough to fill more than a million MR scanners, the BBC stated. Helium is also used to cool satellite instruments and superconducting magnets such as the Large Hadron Collider in Cern, Switzerland, it added.
