Siemens Healthineers has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance for its Compressed Sensing MRI acceleration technology.
Making use of an iterative reconstruction algorithm, Compressed Sensing can cut cardiac cine image acquisition times from the traditional four minutes to 16 seconds, for example, according to the vendor. Patients can breathe freely during image acquisition, instead of having to hold their breath 10 to 14 times over a four-minute period.
The Compressed Sensing Cardiac Cine algorithm effectively eliminates motion artifacts caused by breathing and heartbeats, and its speed will allow new types of patients to access cardiac MRI for the first time, according to the firm. It facilitates recording of the entire cardiac cycle and can be used to quantify left-ventricular function, Siemens said.
Compressed Sensing is available on Siemens' Magnetom Aera 1.5-tesla and Skyra 3-tesla scanners.
