Dear Women's Imaging Insider,
We shine a spotlight on radiation therapy in this installment of the Insider. First, our feature story is on the role of radiotherapy for the treatment of endometrial cancer. Two studies, one from Europe and one from the U.S., came to more or less the same conclusion -- that radiation therapy may prevent relapse in certain patients, but it does not significantly affect overall survival. Click here to learn more.
In another perspective, researchers from East Carolina University in Greenville, NC, claim that chemotherapy confers a survival advantage over whole-abdominal irradiation in women with advanced endometrial carcinoma.
You'll also find an article on delayed tissue toxicity and cosmetic outcomes after accelerated partial-breast irradiation, as well as one on how skipping radiation treatment may increase the chance of recurrence in the ipsilateral breast.
In other women's imaging news, read about the value of scintigraphy in assessing the response of breast cancer patients to endocrine therapy. Also, there are two articles on how computer-aided detection (CAD) can be used to reduce missed breast cancers and assess true-positive markings.
Finally, be sure to come back to the Women's Imaging Digital Community later today for a reaction piece to the recent Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality report that deemed adjuvant breast imaging inadequate in comparison to biopsy.
