Optical molecular imaging developer ART Advanced Research Technologies reported that a study in the August issue of the journal Academic Radiology (Vol. 12:8, pp. 934-937) demonstrated the sensitivity of near-infrared (NIR) optical techniques to the metabolic functions of breast tissue in comparison with traditional mammography.
The 49-patient cohort represented women who had either abnormal or normal mammograms before being imaged with the Montreal-based firm's technology. The patients ranged in age between 24 and 80 years, and the study included subjects who had undergone hormone replacement therapy or hysterectomy, or had dense breasts, the company said.
ART reported that in all cases imaged with suspicious masses, the optical images obtained with its SoftScan device were consistent with mammographic findings.
