Electrical impedance scanning (EIS) developer Mirabel Medical Systems plans to feature its T-Scan 2000ED, a technology designed to serve as an adjunct to a clinical breast exam in women ages 30 to 40, who typically have denser breast tissue.
T-Scan 2000ED technology is based on the discovery that normal and malignant breast tissues have different electrical properties. The patient lies on her back holding a metal cylinder that transmits a low-level electrical signal while the examiner uses a handheld probe to scan each breast and record levels of electrical impedance. Measurements are made over several frequencies using proprietary algorithms to create and display a real-time electrical image of the breast.
In April, Mirabel Medical closed a $9 million second round of funding. The Austin, TX-based firm said the investment will allow it to continue efforts to bring T-Scan 2000ED device to market over the next year. It hopes to receive clearance for the unit in the fourth quarter of 2006.
