Gov. Tom Wolf of Pennsylvania has announced that digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT), or 3D mammography, will be covered by insurance under existing state law and must be provided to Pennsylvania women at no cost.
Wolf made the announcement on October 5 at a Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition meeting in Harrisburg. He ordered the change because his administration decided an existing law requiring insurance companies to pay for mammograms should extend to 3D mammograms as well.
"This modern technology is offering new opportunities for physicians to diagnose breast cancer in women and provide life-saving treatment earlier than ever," Wolf said in a statement. "Questions have arisen as to whether 3D mammograms should be covered by insurance in the same manner that traditional mammograms are. Today, I am announcing that my administration's answer to this question is an absolute yes."
