Artificial intelligence (AI) software developer iCAD is partnering with women's imaging center operator Solis Mammography on a research and commercial collaboration to use mammography exams to screen women for risk of heart disease.
Under the deal, iCAD's ProFound AI software application will be used at Solis facilities to detect and quantify breast arterial calcification (BAC) on mammograms. In previous research, higher levels of these calcifications have been linked to development of heart disease later on in women.
iCAD and Solis will work together to develop an application that can use AI algorithms to identify risk factors in mammograms that may have been previously ignored, according to the companies. Solis adopted iCAD's Breast AI Suite software across its entire network in 2020, and the company notes that it has 100 facilities across the U.S. that can provide support for research into the development of an AI model for BAC detection.
