TiaLinx to develop RF imaging unit for breast cancer

Radiometry sensor developer TiaLinx announced that it is developing AR60-A, a laptop-sized, portable system that uses radiofrequency (RF) imaging to detect abnormal tissue in female breasts.

The system detects the different electrical properties of abnormal cells versus healthy ones, according to the company. It is based on 60-GHz RF scanning technology that does not emit ionizing radiation.

Signal processing with polarization capabilities enhances the suppression of scattering, while the ultrawideband (UWB) transmitter and receiver provide the user with the ability to obtain high-depth resolution for sharp images, TiaLinx said.

The technology will be spun off to a new start-up called MamoMedix that is focused on cancer imaging using UWB RF technology. The firm's charter will be to develop more advanced technologies, run further in vivo tests, and apply for fast-track approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
