Dear Musculoskeletal Imaging Insider,
One of our favorite tunes is "What Is Hip?" by the '70s funk band Tower of Power (TOP). While we don't actually have the answer to that question, we can offer some insight into hip disorders (Yes, we know that was a corny segue, but we attribute our giddiness to visions of sugar plums dancing in our collective heads).
First, Dutch researchers have discovered a pattern in hip osteoarthritis patients who may be headed for total hip replacement, based on the pathogenic progression of their disease. Click here to learn more. According to another study, the benefits of total hip arthroplasty for osteoarthritis are sustained over the long term. To understand how the authors came to that conclusion, click here.
You'll also want to read more about a potential connection between proton pump inhibitor drugs and hip fracture, as well as how Danish investigators calculated an increasing mortality among elderly people after they sustain a hip fracture.
Last but not least, check out the Insider Exclusive on a 3D CT-based planning module for acetabular fracture reduction. The inventors of this platform evaluated its ability to improve surgical accuracy. Click here for the details.
As always, the Musculoskeletal Digital Imaging Community is bursting with the latest in MSK news, such as how vertebral body patterns may predict cement-related fractures, and greenlighting bone densitometry scans in men using the Male Osteoporosis Risk Estimation Score (MORES). Also, read how magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) can identify and quantify myofascial taut bands that are missed on physical examination.
Finally, enjoy our orthopedic-related reports from the 2007 RSNA meeting in Chicago:
- The value of MDCT for assessing acute vertebral fractures
- US-guided therapy for tendon calcification
- Cryoablative pain management for bone metastasis
Now if you'll excuse us, we're going to put on some TOP, pour ourselves a cup of calcium-rich eggnog, and do some weight-bearing dancing. Happy holidays!
