EOS begins clinical trial

Medical device firm Electro-Optical Sciences (EOS) has begun a clinical trial for its MelaFind skin imaging device.

Designed to improve the early diagnosis of melanoma, MelaFind emits light of multiple wavelengths to capture images of suspicious pigmented skin lesions and extract data, according to the Irvington, NY-based firm. The data are then analyzed against a proprietary database of melanomas and benign lesions to provide information and produce a recommendation of whether the lesion should be biopsied, EOS said.

EOS anticipates it will submit a premarket approval (PMA) application for MelaFind in the second half of 2007.
