Current Opinion for cardiology, pediatrics, and oncology are among the journals with editions available for free at a Web site maintained by publisher Lippincott Williams & Wilkins of Philadelphia.
Full-text articles will be available through November 2000 at www.currentopinion.com. Of particular interest to those working with musculoskeletal imaging is an article in the August 2000 Current Opinion in Orthopaedics. Dr. Leslie Grissom and Dr. Theodore Harcke from Alfred I. duPont Institute in Wilmington, DE, discuss the value of ultrasonography in the early diagnosis of developmental dysplasia of the infant hip (DDH).
The authors of the literature review summarize the various benefits and pitfalls of incorporating ultrasound into DDH diagnosis and treatment. While ultrasound is better suited for imaging the cartilage of the femoral head and acetabulum in the neonatal period, it can also result in more frequent false positives and possible overtreatment, the authors stated.
Other imaging-related papers in the latest issues available on the Web site include:
- A commentary on the role of ultrasound in determining diagnostic markers for inflammatory bowel disease, featured in Current Opinion in Gastroenterology. In another article, Drs. Dennis Blom and Jeffrey Peters discuss "Surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy in carcinoma of the esophagus," while a group from Queen Mary Hospital in Hong Kong offers a meta-analysis of current literature on staging esophageal cancer.
- An essay by Dr. Todd Dorman of Johns Hopkins School of Medicine explains the role of telemedicine in providing emergency services to patients in remote areas, in Current Opinion in Critical Care.
- An overview by Canadian and Korean clinicians on "Noninvasive imaging in congenital heart disease" can be found in Current Opinion in Cardiology.
- Two researchers from the University of Milan expound on the role of MRI in evaluating multiple sclerosis in Current Opinion in Neurology. Dr. Sheena Aurora from Henry Ford Hospital and her co-author tackle imaging the migraine headache.
- In Current Opinion in Obstetrics & Gynecology, clinicians from St. Mary’s Hospital in London discuss interstitial thermoablation under MRI guidance for the treatment of uterine fibroids.
