A start-up joint venture between the University of Houston and Fannin Innovation Studio has received a grant to develop and market a robotic system for MRI-guided procedures.
GuidaBot received a one-year, $225,000 small business technology transfer grant from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF). With the funds, it will develop technology that will allow doctors to perform biopsies while patients remain in the MR scanner.
The technology was originally developed with a $1.5 million NSF Cyber-Physical Systems award. The new grant will help GuidaBot to "maintain momentum in the lab to commercialize the device for medical use," said Michael Heffernan, PhD, director of research and development.
