Security fears shut down ESTI 2016; cardboard virtual reality; CT use grows for minor injuries

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

A major European chest imaging meeting scheduled to take place in Turkey in May has been canceled due to concerns over the security situation in the country.

The European Society of Thoracic Imaging (ESTI) was supposed to convene May 26-28 in Istanbul. But after rising security concerns in the city, ESTI officials last week announced that the congress would be canceled.

It's the second radiology conference that's been canceled in the Middle East due to security issues in the last two years. Read more by clicking here.

Cardboard virtual reality

What does cardboard have to do with virtual reality? Quite a bit, surprisingly, according to a new story in our Advanced Visualization Community.

Physicians at a Florida hospital were able to plan a successful heart surgery on a 4-month-old infant from Minnesota using medical images that were viewed with a stereoscopic virtual reality viewer called Google Cardboard.

Typically selling for less than $20, Google Cardboard gives users a low-budget virtual reality experience. The Florida doctors converted CT data into 3D models that were then viewed with Google Cardboard.

CT use grows for minor injuries

Finally, visit our CT Community to learn about a new study that's found that the use of CT for minor injuries has doubled in California in the past decade. The findings suggest that not all the utilization is appropriate -- and it could be leading to unnecessary radiation dose.
