It's the season for fall competition, whether it be playoff baseball, football in all parts of the world, or the Minnies, which will be announced next week! Speaking of competition, ultrasound and MRI continue to square off in a battle for superiority among radiation-free imaging modalities.
Swedish researchers decided to pit these two modalities head-to-head for preoperative staging of endometrial cancer. Did transvaginal ultrasound (TVUS) gain the upper hand or did MRI prevail? Check it out in this edition's Insider Exclusive.
In related news, TVUS may not be needed when checking for positional follow-ups after correct insertion of an intrauterine device (IUD) in women. A Dutch team found very low risk for malposition if women report no complaints of unfavorable bleeding or pelvic pain.
A Duke University team found that using Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System (TI-RADS) and an algorithm based on ultrasound images can differentiate between malignant and benign lesions in pediatric patients. The two methods were compared to the impressions of radiologists.
4D ultrasound meanwhile shows fetal reactions to different tastes introduced to pregnant women. Fetuses showed "cry-face" reactions to bitter kale flavors while showing happier facial expressions to sweeter carrot flavors.
New research shows that a protocol using 2D ultrasound images can help stage and monitor hepatic steatosis in liver patients without the need for invasive biopsy or costly MRI.
