Dear AuntMinnie Member,
Despite rumors of their imminent demise, small radiology practices are showing more resilience than many industry observers expected. A recent survey by the American College of Radiology indicates that small and solo practices continue to make up a significant share of the U.S. radiology market, according to an article by contributing writer Tracie L. Thompson that we're featuring this week in our Imaging Center Digital Community.
Many radiology watchers have predicted that small radiology groups would go the way of the dinosaur as larger groups consolidate the imaging services sector. But the percentage of radiologists working in smaller practices is declining more slowly than predicted, according to the ACR. And the growth of larger practices is not as rapid as one might think.
Smaller practices in the survey showed great flexibility; the image of a tiny rural practice relying exclusively on the local hospital for referrals is not entirely accurate, according to survey data. At the same time, larger practices showed some surprising deviations from conventional wisdom in terms of the way they were structured.
