Klebsiella:

Clinical:

Klebsiella pneumonia is an uncommon community acquired pneumonia, but a common nosocomial infection [1]. It typically affects the elderly, debilitated, COPD, or alcoholic patient. Bacteremia occurs in 25% and there is a high mortality (25-50%).

The CXR usually demonstrates a dense lobar consolidation. Bulging of the adjacent fissure due to large amounts of accumulated fluid and inflammatory exudate is felt to be characteristic of the infection, but it is observed uncommonly. The infection has a propensity for the posterior segment of the upper lobe and an associated empyema is common. Cavitation/abscess formation occur in about 50% of cases.
